  Bromley Chapelski partners to join Bull, Housser & Tupper[added August 14/08]
We are delighted to announce that John Bromley, Shelley Chapelski and Jason Kostyniuk will be joining our partnership on September 1, 2008 in order to enhance and extend our Maritime Practice and augment our Transportation Industry Group. All three were previously with the maritime boutique law firm of Bromley Chapelski and collectively bring more than 50 years of maritime law experience to BH&T.

  New Associate joins our Local Government Group [added July 23/08]
Ann Behennah joins Local Government Group as an Associate. Ann received her LL.B. from the University of Alberta in 2006 and practiced with the City of Calgary Law Department as a Planning Lawyer since her call to the Alberta Bar in 2007. Ann has an avid interest in municipal law and government and brings much experience from her time in Calgary, having been involved with files connected to expropriation, land development, litigation, prosecutions, affordable housing, bylaw drafting, heritage building preservation, real estate, and jurisdictional issues.
  BH&T's Labour & Employment Group welcomes new Associate [added June 3/08]
BH&T is pleased to welcome Kristy Sim who has joined our Labour & Employment Group as an associate. Kristy obtained a Bachelor of Arts and her LL.B. from the University of British Columbia. She articled with McCullough Blazina Dieno in Victoria and was called to the BC Bar in August 2006. Kristy is active in the community and works with an advocacy group that provides legal assistance to low income people.
  BH&T’s Tax & Trusts Group welcomes new associate [added May 23/08]
Riley Burr completed his articles at BH&T and joined our Tax & Trusts Group as an Associate upon his call to the British Columbia Bar on May 22, 2008. Riley earned his BA with a double major in English and Liberal Studies from Malaspina University College and his LL.B. from the University of Victoria in 2007.
  Carmen Thériault shares insights as Chair of the Lions Gate Foundation[added May 9/08]
Carmen Thériault was recently featured in an article in the North Shore News focussed on her work as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Lions Gate Foundation. Describing the Foundation as one of the best-run organizations she has come across, she continues to volunteer an average of 20 hours per month to the charity keeping her connected to the community.
  Three Articled Students join BH&T as Associates [added May 8/08]

A 2007 graduate of University of British Columbia, Alexander Fane completed his articles with BH&T and was called to the British Columbia Bar on May 7, 2008. Alexander is a Vancouver native who studied first year law at the University of Saskatchewan before transferring to UBC Law school. He earned his BA, Political Science, from McGill University in 2000, and his International Baccalaureate in 1997.  Upon his call to the British Columbia Bar on May 7, 2008, Alexander joined our Real Estate Group.

Andrew Schafer joined BH&T as a summer student in 2006 and completed his articles with us.  Prior to joining the firm, Andrew earned his BA, History (minor in Political Science) from the University of British Columbia in 2004 and his LL.B. from Queen’s University Law School in Kingston, Ontario in 2007.  Andrew joined our Labour Group upon his call to the British Columbia Bar on May 7, 2008.

Sanjukta Tole completed her articles at BH&T and joined our Business Group upon her call to the British Columbia Bar on May 7, 2008.  Sanjukta earned her Hon. BSc, specializing in human behavioural biology, from the University of Toronto in 2004 and her LL.B. from Osgood Hall Law School in 2007.

Our friend and former partner, Hugh Murray, passed away on March 24, 2008. Hugh was a long time member of our firm and will be greatly missed.   BH&T welcomes new Partner [added March 18/08]
Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP is pleased to welcome Richard Sarabando into the partnership effective January 1, 2008. Richard is a member of our Corporate Finance and Banking Group. His practice focuses on commercial law with particular emphasis on representing both lenders and borrowers on debt financings and secured lending transactions. Richard completed his articles with Davis & Company, was called to the Bar on February 19, 1999 and joined BH&T in January of 2003.
  BH&T's Tax and Trusts Group welcomes new Associate Counsel [added March 5/08]
BH&T is pleased to announce that Barbara Janzen joined the firm on February 1, 2008 as Associate Counsel in our Tax and Trusts Group. Barbara was called to the Alberta Bar in 1994 and to the BC Bar in 2006. Prior to joining the firm she was a Wealth Advisor with a major financial institution and an associate with Parlee McLaws in Calgary. Barbara has a wide range of experience in the areas of wealth management, wills, estate planning, estate administration, and incapacitated adult matters. Barbara has conducted numerous courses and seminars in her area of expertise.
  BH&T welcomes Eric Kerr [added January 29/08]
BH&T is pleased to welcome Eric Kerr who has joined our Real Estate Group as an associate. Eric obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Victoria and his LL.B. degree from Dalhousie University. Pamela Jefcoat is a member of our Local Government and Real Estate Practice Groups, where she provides counsel and solicitor’s services to local government clients and other regulatory bodies. Her practice involves providing advice on issues relating to liability, administrative law, access to information, expropriation and land development. Pamela also holds an M.A. in Public Administration, with a focus on water resource management.

Kimberly Kuntz acts as counsel in the General Corporate and Estate Litigation areas with an emphasis on product liability, negligence actions, complex jurisdictional and cross-border disputes. She has represented clients before all levels of court including the British Columbia Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. As part of her general litigation practice, Kimberly is a member of the legal team representing the Government of British Columbia in an action to recover tobacco-related health care costs.

Christian Petersen is a member of our Commercial Litigation and Labour & Employment practice groups. Christian has been involved in a variety of litigation matters with a focus on commercial and real estate litigation. He has also acted for numerous clients in the areas of corporate governance, insurance and employment law and has appeared before all levels of court in British Columbia.

  BH&T's Corporate Finance and Banking Group welcomes new associate [added December 18/07]
Rina Maharaj recently joined our Corporate Finance & Banking Group as an associate. Prior to joining the firm as an articling student, Rina was a partner with Walker Kontos Advocates, a leading commercial law firm in Kenya where she practised primarily in the areas of commercial and business law, banking and finance law, and conveyancing. In addition to working with our Banking Group, Rina's broad range of experience in the conveyancing and commercial law arenas enables her to assist our Business, Real Estate and Energy & Infrastructure Groups with various matters.

BH&T is pleased to welcome Lance Bredeson who has joined our Business Group as an associate. Lance recently completed a Master of Laws at the University of Toronto with a focus on securities and corporate law. Prior to his graduation, Lance obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in 2000 from Simon Fraser University and his LL.B. degree with distinction in 2003 from the University of Ottawa. He articled at Farris and then joined Baker Newby where he was involved in corporate and commercial transactions.
  Articled Students join BH&T as Associates [added October 12/07]
We are pleased to welcome new Associates Sarah Harbottle, Kieran Moore and Jonathan Levy to Bull, Housser & Tupper.

A 2006 graduate of UBC Law School, Sarah completed her articles with BH&T and was called to the British Columbia Bar on May 15, 2007. Upon her call Sarah joined the firm’s Health Care Group, where she assists senior lawyers in providing counsel and solicitor’s services to hospitals and health authorities on all aspects of law that affect their operations.

Kieran joined BH&T as a co-op student in 2004. Prior to joining the firm, Kieran worked for the federal government as a co-op student, and for a New York City litigation firm as a legal intern. Upon his call to the British Columbia Bar on May 15, 2007, Kieran joined our Commercial Litigation Group and is involved in a variety of civil matters including insurance, municipal, and intellectual property disputes.

Jonathan completed his articles at BH&T and joined our Commercial Litigation Group upon his call to the British Columbia Bar on August 9, 2007. Jonathan earned his Bachelor of Arts (English Literature) degree from the University of British Columbia in 2002 and his LL.B. degree from the University of Windsor in 2006.

Emma McArthur was called in B.C. in 2005 and came to BH&T from the firm of Peterson Stark Scott where her primary focus was in the area of estate planning.   Spirit Bears In The City [added May 15/06]

Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP is proud to sponsor Kermode Spirit Bears in the City, a public art project of the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities benefiting Easter Seal Operations and the Canucks for Kids Fund. The “BH&T Bearrister Bear”, designed by world renowned local artist Judson Beaumont, was presented to the media, the public, invited guests and public officials at the unveiling ceremony held April 28th. Our bear will live near our offices at 1055 West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver from May through to October 2006.   Basketball BC awards Special Award of Merit [added April 03/06]
 
Laura Donaldson will be receiving a Special Award of Merit from Basketball BC on April 22. Laura's hard work and dedication helped establish the Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program, a province-wide youth basketball program that allows kids in grades 2 through 9 participate in community-based leagues around British Columbia. Currently this programs counts over 9000 participants around the province. Congratulations Laura!
 
  BH&T Lawyer involved with Nunavut Land Claims Agreement [added April 03/06]
 
Craig Jones has recently finished nine months' work as Counsel to Conciliator Thomas R. Berger O.C., Q.C. in the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement implementation process. The Conciliator's Final Report was issued to the parties on March 1st. The 100 page document will be made public on April 10th in Inuktitut, English and French.

Junior Achievement’s Laureate Luncheon held February 26th and co-sponsored by BH&T was the inaugural event for the new Business Laureates of BC Hall of Fame created to recognize the outstanding contributions BC business leaders have made to the economic growth and development of our Province.   BH&T's Participation in RAV Recognized by Project Finance Magazine[added February 20/06]
    
The Richmond-Airport-Vancouver Rapid Transit Project (now called the "Canada Line") has been named the North American Infrastructure Deal of the Year and North American Transportation Deal of the Year by Project Finance magazine. Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP, counsel to the company set up to procure this project for the public funders, is extremely proud to have been part of this major transportation initiative - the largest public-private partnership ever undertaken in Canada.   Hon. William Esson returns to BH&T as Associate Counsel [added February 13/06]
 
We are pleased to announce that the Hon. William Esson has joined Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP as Associate Counsel. Mr. Esson articled with BH&T and joined the firm upon being called to the bar in 1958 where he quickly established himself as one of Vancouver's finest litigators. In 1979 he was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia (which was also the first in a long line of judicial appointments from BH&T). In 1983 Mr. Justice Esson was appointed to the Court of Appeal where he served until his appointment as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1989. In 1996 Mr. Justice Esson returned to the Court of Appeal where he remained until his retirement late last year.

We are delighted that Mr. Esson has returned to the firm and look forward to his expertise in a variety of legal matters.

Neil Davie recently joined our Real Estate Group. Prior to BH&T, Neil worked at another Vancouver firm. Neil graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelors Degree in Science (Chemistry) and completed his LL.B. at the University of British Columbia in 2001. Neil's practice involves all aspects of real estate, including acquisition, financing, leasing, development and the sale of residential, industrial, office and retail properties. The expertise that he brings will be a great benefit to our firm and our clients.
It is with greatest sadness that we announce the passing of William C. Bice, Q.C. [added January 18/06]

Our friend and partner Bill Bice passed away suddenly on January 17, 2006. Bill was a part of the fabric of our firm for over forty years. He was a leader of the bar and of the community and was universally respected and admired. Please see the official announcement.   Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP Welcomes Two New Associates [added December 4/05]
The firm is pleased to welcome new associates Sarah Hansen and Jeremy Lovell.

Sarah will be working with our Energy & Infrastructure Group. She has recently returned to Canada after completing a Masters of Law in Public International Law focusing on International Energy and Environment at the London School of Economics. Prior to this, and since her call to the Alberta Bar in 2000, Sarah's practice in Calgary focused on energy law litigation. She also has experience in the areas of administrative and aboriginal law.

Jeremy has joined our Engineering & Construction Group. Jeremy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and International Relations from UBC in 1997. He attended law school at both the University of Toronto and the University of Victoria and completed his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1999. While at the University of Victoria, Jeremy served as the Coordinating Editor of the Law Review. He was called to the British Columbia Bar in 2001 after completing his articles with a local Vancouver firm.

Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP's Business Group Welcomes Two New Associates
[added December 4/05]
Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP is pleased to welcome two new associates to the firm's Business Group: Vida Mehin and Michael Posnikoff.

Vida completed her articles with our firm, and was called to the British Columbia Bar, in 2003. For the past year, Vida has been working at the Ontario Securities Commission, in the Office of the Chair and Vice-Chairs. She is called to the Bar in Ontario and New York State.

Michael grew up in Vancouver, did his undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria and attended law school at UBC and Dalhousie. Once Michael completed his articles in Halifax he practised there for a year in a small tax boutique.

Bull Housser & Tupper LLP represented the British Columbia Crown in a closely-watched constitutional case before the Supreme Court of Canada on June 8. At issue was the validity of the Province's Tobacco Damages and Health Care Costs Recovery Act, which is the foundation for the government's lawsuit against the tobacco industry to recover the costs of treating smoking-related disease

Dan Webster, Q.C., Elliott Myers, Q.C. and Craig Jones represented the government with co-counsel Thomas Berger O.C., Q.C.

On September 29th, the Supreme Court decided in favour of British Columbia on all points. The government's lawsuit, which was on hold pending the outcome of the constitutional case, will now proceed.
